Marine fuel diversification and the challenge of scaling shipping decarbonisation were central themes at SIBCON 2026 in Singapore, according to Alkagesta’s account of its participation. The company said its team completed a week of conference sessions and meetings with participants from the global shipping and marine fuels industries, alongside discussions with customers and suppliers.
Alkagesta reported that sessions explored a future in which vessels use a broader mix of fuels, with biofuels, methanol and LNG complementing conventional options. Discussions considered how that mix could vary across vessel types and trade routes. The company linked those themes to its own expansion in sustainable fuels, citing a five-year UCO feedstock offtake agreement and a multi-year agreement for biofuel storage at Pantank in Antwerp.
Security of supply was another recurring topic, the company said. Conference discussions presented fuel diversification as a way to manage risk by limiting reliance on a single source of supply. According to Alkagesta, participants examined how a wider range of fuel options could strengthen operators’ resilience against a backdrop that included continuing supply pressures in global energy markets.
The conference also considered what would be needed to take decarbonisation beyond pilot programmes and into commercial-scale operations. Alkagesta’s summary identified clearer regulation, safety frameworks and access to finance as the factors industry leaders highlighted as necessary to support that transition. These discussions covered both the sector’s immediate priorities and its longer-term development.
Alkagesta’s delegation included founder and chief executive Orkhan Rustamov; Tural Huseynov, managing director for investments and asset management; Agshin Bakirzade, APAC commodity trading director; Mithat Çiftçioğlu, marine fuels distribution director; and senior marine fuel trader Afiq Salim. Outside the formal programme, the company said it met shipowners, bunker traders and other industry counterparts to maintain existing relationships and explore potential collaboration across APAC.
